Before coming to the benefits of internal linking, let’s understand what’s an external link? – An external link is a link that you get from another site to your site. They’re basically important for referral traffic and SEO, but as said they’re on other websites.

3 Benefits of an Internal Linking

Internal linking is very important for three reasons, strengthening three parts of your funnel. These three benefits are:-

  1. They pass authority from one page to another (search optimization)
  2. They guide visitors to high-value, high-converting pages (usability)
  3. They prompt visitors to act as calls to action (conversion optimization)

Internal Link Strategy 1 – Links That Affect Search Engine Rankings

When one of your web pages links to another page, it passes some of its credibility to that page, increasing the likelihood that the second page will rank. This credibility is also known as “link juice,” but most of the search optimizers call it “authority.”

Note:- Interlinking don’t increase the amount of authority of your overall website, but they do pass authority between the pages on your website. They pass the “Page Authority” from one page to another. In this way, pages can help each other rank in search engines.

Important fact:- Links that come from some other websites pass “Domain Authority” that increase the authority of all the pages on your website.

Steps to get the most SEO value from internal links

1.) Some of your web pages have more authority than others. The best example is the homepage. These are pages that already have links pointing to them. Links from these pages to other pages will pass more authority and the SEO value.

Which of your pages has the most authority? – Way To Find

Use Moz’s Link Explorer to check.

You just need to enter your domain name and click on the “Top Pages” report. This will show you all of your pages, ranked in order of “Page Authority.” Links from the pages with higher authority will pass the most authority and the ranking potential.

Alternatively, go to Google Search Console.

In the Search Traffic >> Links to Your Site >> Your most linked content report. This shows the web pages that have the most external links & the most authority.

2.) Some of your web pages will benefit from the authority more than others. These are pages that may be ranking, but not that high. Links to these pages might help your rankings a lot.

Which of your pages is almost ranking high? – Way To Find

Go to the Acquisition >> Search Engine Optimization >> Queries report. Set the date range.

Create an advanced filter ie add AVERAGE POSITION so you can see just the phrases for which your webpage rank higher than 10.

Sort by the average position. There’s your list of phrases for which you almost rank high!

Go to Google and then search for each phrase to confirm the ranking and find the corresponding page. (However sometimes data mismatch)

So, from the high-authority page, just create a link somewhere within the body text of your webpage, to the almost-high-ranking page.

Note:- Linking from the first type of page to the very second is easy, free and fast.

Internal Link Strategy 2 – Guide Visitors to High Converting Pages

Undoubtedly, some page attracts a lot of visitors and the primary reasons are that they already rank high or they get shared a lot. You can call these page “Traffic Champions”. Linking your traffic champions to your conversion champions can have a very dramatic impact on your marketing.

Which of your pages attract the most traffic? – Way To Find

This is very easy to check in analytics.

You just need to go to the Behavior >> Site Content >> All Pages report. Choose a long date range of three to six months. This will give the of the pages that had been viewed the most.

Link from the traffic champions to the conversion champions – Somewhere in the text of the high-traffic pages, link to that of the high-converting pages.

Internal Link Strategy 3: Links That Prompt Visitors to Act (CTA)

As a professional in digital marketing, the primary goal is to attract visitors, present them with powerful marketing claims, support these claims with some very powerful & luring evidence and then gently guide them to take action (CALL TO ACTION). Internal links are a key way to prompt visitors to act.

You must look at the bottom of any of your marketing pages.

  • What is the last line of text?
  • Does it suggest the visitor take the call to action?
  • Does it offer help?
  • Does it start a conversation?
  • Or does the page just end?
